When I became a journalism major I didn’t know what public relations was. I had a vague understanding of marketing and advertising, but PR was a mystery. I’ve developed my own definition after studying PR for the past two years and gaining real world experience at a variety of internships.
I think PR is about relationship building through honest communication.
Whether that be writing a traditional press release, responding to a customer on Twitter, emailing a pitch to a journalist, meeting with media at a trade show, or writing a performance update in an investor newsletter it’s about getting relevant information to interested audiences and being available for their inquires.
It’s also about tracking media coverage so you can learn what works and what doesn’t when it comes to working with the media because at the end of the day every company needs to see a positive return on investment.
One of my favorite aspects of public relations is that practically every industry from technology companies, to health care facilities, to nonprofit organizations, to government offices, to concert venues nee
